Monday, April 28th, 2008 by Zonker Digg!

A few weeks ago we announced that we’d be merging suseforums.net, suselinuxsupport.de, and the openSUSE support forums at forums.novell.com into one central forum under forums.opensuse.org. (You can visit the URL right now if you like, but there’s little there aside from the initial announcement…)

I just thought I’d provide a brief update on where that’s at, because I know things have been quite since then. (I got a question about the forums yesterday at LinuxFest Northwest.)

In this case, “quiet” only means that things are moving along quite well. The current thought is that we’ll be ready to launch the merged forums in mid-May.

We’ll be putting out a more formal announcement near the launch date, but I wanted to note that the forum merger is moving ahead as planned and all of the folks involved are working hard to provide a unified forum for openSUSE users and contributors.

I’m really looking forward to the unified forum and I want to thank everyone working on the project. In particular, I’d like to thank Rupert Horstkötter, Keith Kastorff, Kim Groneman,  Michael Loeffler, and Wolfgang Koller for leading this effort.  There’s been a lot of hard work put into this project, and it’s going to be really beneficial for the project once it’s completed.

This is great news, one of the reasons I keep switching back to ubuntu, is their forum-community. However, with a unified opensuse forum, openSuse 11.0 and kde 4.1 around the corner, I’m looking forward to once again start using Suse.

A unified forum and 11.0 will be wonderful gifts to the community. Three times the fun! No, six times! Wow, I can’t wait!

I don’t really know if I will be bothered with this forum. I’ve found the staff at suseforums.net to be very rude and arrogant towards a number of noobs.

I personally think novell and opensuse should go it alone, the community would grow fast. This merger with the others is a bad idea, and will lead to problems down the track. Opensuse needs a decent forum, but not with staff who are rude and arrogant towards noobs like this forum has been. But hey, when you are mods you can quickly delete that evidence huh.

Disclaimer: I am a Moderator at suselinuxsupport.de, However, I am also a member at suseforums.net, and I have not witness behavior as extreme as you state for that Forum. If you wish to be given credence for your comment, you should provide some more information other than the Moderators hid the evidence.

Also the new merged Forum will have the Moderators from all 3 sites and we will be working to provide the best experience we can. Remember that Mods are just ordinary members like yourself, that have agreed to take on some additional duties, that of keeping things from degenerating into acrimony.

I say give the new Merged Forum a chance, the cost is little $9.95/mo, so what have you got to lose?

* The monthly cost is a joke, BTW.
